You are the Cosmos

I don't know if you've been taught this: the idea that you are part of the cosmos—that the Earth is just a mere speck in an endlessly expanding universe. Well, that was my worldview: scientifically brilliant yet mechanistically cold...until I was 25.

Oh, how a shift in worldview can transform a life! Everything about how I moved through the world changed when I realized I was not just part of the cosmos, I was the cosmos in human form. It's a tiny yet mighty detail. As William Blake once wrote, “If the doors of perception were cleansed, everything would appear to man as it is, infinite.”

Stepping into the archetypal cosmos—seeing the correlation between planetary alignments and human affairs—cleansed the doors of my perception. I began to feel like a character from X-Men, with cosmological powers flowing through me.

I was not separate from the Sun, the Moon, or Saturn. I was all those planetary archetypes—that is what Somya, her psyche, is made of. By awakening to this reality, I have been able to express myself with greater creativity and clarity.

And so it goes for you. Next time you look up at the sky and see the Moon and stars, notice how there is actually no separation. Yes, I know—it appears as though there is. But when science tells us that atoms are 99% empty space, then what is separation, really?

Perhaps this Zen poem by Ryōkan can shed some light:

Relying upon a finger, we see the moon
Relying upon the moon, we understand the finger.
Moon and finger
Are neither the same nor different.
This expedient analogy is for guiding beginners.
Having seen reality as it is,
There is neither moon nor finger.

In Mystery,
Somya Desai

Cosmos of Culture

Low Alcohol Consumption

The buzzkill is real. A recent Gallup poll shows that Americans are drinking less alcohol—54% of adults now say they drink, down from 60%, a level that held steady between 1997 and 2023.

We’ve been tracking this trend since 2024, mapping it against the Saturn–Neptune cycle, which often coincides with cultural gravitations toward inhibition and withdrawal. Saturn and Neptune are currently aligned, a configuration that will continue shaping the collective mood until 2027.

The archetype of Saturn embodies restriction, sacrifice, and wisdom. Neptune, on the other hand, expresses escapism, transcendence, and addiction. Together, this archetypal combination can manifest as either spiritual discipline—sobriety, restraint, and clarity—or a dark night of the soul, where the absence of escape feels unbearable.

Mythic Wisdom

Carl Sagan on Cosmos

The Cosmos is all that is or was or ever will be. Our contemplations of the Cosmos stir us–there is a tingling in the spine, a catch in the voice, a faint sensation, as if a distant memory, of falling from a great height. We know we are approaching the grandest of mysteries.

The size and age of the Cosmos are beyond ordinary human understanding. Lost somewhere between immensity and eternity is our tiny planetary home, the Earth. For the first time, we have the power to decide the fate of our planet and ourselves. This is a time of great danger but our species is young and curious and brave, it shows much promise. In the last few millennia we have made the most astonishing and unexpected discoveries about the Cosmos and our place within it. I believe our future depends powerfully on how well we understand this Cosmos in which we float like a mote of dust in the morning sky.
